A Clinical Review and Comparative Analysis in Breast Cancer Surgery

Abstract
This is a clincal, retrospective analysis of 307 breast cancer patients treated at Presbyterian Medical Center in Chonju, from January 1981 to December 1990.
@ES The following results were obtained;
@EN 1) The average age of breast cancer patients was 48 and the peak incidence was 4th decade comprising of 41% among 307 cases.
2) The major symptoms were palpable breast mass, pain and axillary mass.
3) In 73.6% of all cases, the duration of symptoms was less than one year. The most frequent site of the lesion was UOQ in 42.7%.
4) The most common histopathologic type was invasive ductal adenocarcinoma comprising of 7.9% and the commonest pathologic stage was Stage IIA composed of 91 cases(30%) among 307 patients.
5) The overall 50year survival rates according to pathologic stage were 100% in each Stage 0 & 1,95% in Stage IIA, 82% in Stage IIB, 55.5% in Stage IIIA, and 40.4% in Stage IIIB.
6) The overall 50year survival rates according to the numbers of lymph node invasion were 91.1% in 0 node, 97.3% in 1~3 nodes, 60.5% 4~6 nodes and 33.9% in the case of more than 10 node invasion.
7) In Stage III, 39 Patients underwent Standard radical mastecomy and their overall 5-year survival rate was 23.4% comparing to 33.6% in Modified radical mastectomy(33 patients). Also 5-year disease free survival rate was 15.6% in Standard
radical
mastectomy and 12.6% in Modified radical mastectomy.
8) According to the treatment modality in Stage III, the overall 3-year survival rate was 68.8% in Standard radical mastectomy with Chemotherapy(pre and postop) and 85.7% in the combined treatment group of Standard radical mastectomy,
Chemotherapy
and
Irradiation.
